Why this project
Cambridge is a diverse city where people come from different countries and share different cultures.
English is my additional language, so sometimes I can't understand others' communication. I often heard different languages in Cambridge, or English mixed with other languages. I don't understand either.
So I thought, why should I understand? I'm just like a newborn baby, unable to understand languages, but my eyes have seen people and my ears have heard many languages. These novel senses had already made me very excited.
So I took my sketchbook and sat in the shopping mall, coffee shop, park and station, enjoying this sensory experience. I secretly listened to people's conversations and truthfully recorded their pronunciations. Then I quickly drew down the picture of people's figure. This is my observational painting, combined with observational hearing.
In my works, people's images are abstract and language does not even exist. Perhaps my audience will also experience the novelty and strangeness of encountering so many new people and cultures in Cambridge.

Process
I didn't establish this project from the very beginning. Instead, I determined the direction through continuous experiments. At first, I just wanted to do something with "text". And I was in a hurry to seek meaning to add to the text itself. In confusion, I went outside to sketch. I finally found that text is a unique voice to me. People's communication is through text, and different text have different sounds. Honestly, I don't understand these text, but that's precisely where their charm lies.
This project was one I was working on during my postgraduate studies. In the following process slide, the content starts from Chapter Two. Chapter One is another experimental project in the course, so it is not placed here.
